Garfield the Cat Day 2027

Until Garfield the Cat Day are 247 days, ie 8 months and 4 days.

In 2027 Garfield the Cat Day is on June 19th (saturday).

Garfield the Cat Day falls on June 19th and commemorates the debut of the famous orange cat from Jim Davis's 1978 comic strip. On this day, fans celebrate their love for lazing around, eating lasagna, and their hatred of Mondays.

How did it start?

The origin of Garfield the Cat Day is inextricably linked to the birth of one of the most iconic characters in the history of world comics. It all started on June 19, 1978, when comic strips by Jim Davis debuted in the American press, telling the story of a lazy, cynical, lasagna-loving orange cat. Davis created this character after noticing a market niche - media at the time lacked distinct cat characters, while dogs enjoyed huge popularity. The artist took the name for his new, moody hero from his grandfather, James Garfield Davis, who - in the author's own words - resembled a huge, grumpy cat in disposition.

The official holiday was born exactly twenty years later, in 1998. It was then, on the occasion of the round anniversary of the series' existence, that Jim Davis, together with the authorities of his hometown of Muncie, Indiana, officially established June 19th as Garfield the Cat Day. The event was meant to be not only a way of thanking millions of fans around the world, but also an opportunity to celebrate the specific lifestyle that this pop culture phenomenon is famous for - full of long naps, avoiding Mondays, and eating Italian pasta with impunity.

A few tidbits about the famous cat

Garfield is a character full of surprising secrets that shaped his global phenomenon. Although the whole world associates him with a love of laziness, few people know that the orange cat broke an official Guinness World Record as the most widely syndicated comic strip in the world - his adventures were printed simultaneously in over 2,500 periodicals. Another interesting fact is the evolution of his appearance; in 1978, Garfield resembled a fat, realistic cat on all fours with small eyes. Only over time, influenced by a suggestion from the creator of the "Snoopy" comic strip, Charles Schulz, did Davis "stand" Garfield on his hind legs and enlarge his eyes, which gave him a more human, expressive facial mimicry.

Remarkable real-world stories are also connected with this pop culture icon. In the 1980s and 1990s, plush Garfield toys with suction cups mounted on car windows were extremely popular. For over 30 years, hundreds of plastic phones shaped like this cat mysteriously landed on the beaches of Brittany in France, becoming a mystery for ecologists - it was only in 2019 that it was discovered they came from a lost shipping container stuck in a seaside cave. Interestingly, despite his huge popularity in the Arab world, the comic had to undergo censorship there, as a result of which Garfield's menu was changed: due to religious rules, his beloved lasagna could not contain pork.

Garfield's Presidential roots

Although Garfield is mainly associated with laziness and pop culture, his name carries a surprising political heritage. Jim Davis named his comic strip hero after his grandfather, James Garfield Davis. In turn, the cartoonist's older relative received these names directly after James Abram Garfield - the 20th President of the United States, who held office in 1881. In this way, a unique connection was born, in which the name of one of the most important leaders in US history, through the Davis family tradition, became a symbol of the most moody, grumpy, and lasagna-loving cat in the world.
