World Snow Day is the second phase of the campaign ‘Bring Children to the Snow’ and is annually observed on the third Sunday in January since 2011. It was created by the International Ski Federation (FIS), which is responsible for promoting different snow activities. The idea of establishing World Snow Day was to deliver an experience, mostly for children, to enjoy and explore the snow, try different snow sports for the first time. The primary reason, however, is to reverse the decline of people participating in snow related activities.
As the FIS President says: ‘The children are our future’. It is not only connected with winter sports, such as skiing or snowboarding. The children are also the next generation to take care of the environment of our planet. If they do it well, their children will also have the opportunity to enjoy snow in the future. If not – snow may disappear forever. This is why World Snow Day is not just another day for fun. It is supposed to make us all aware of that fact, as well as health benefits of snow sports.
World Snow Day is every year connected with many snow-related events held in different countries around the world. They are not only focused on experiencing the children’ fascination of snow sports, but also educate them how to be safe while enjoying the snow and learn about the environment. Third Sunday of January is a great opportunity to take your kids with you and participate in one of such events.
Did you know?
FIS is not only responsible for activities such as skiing or snowboarding, but also many other winter sports: alpine skiing, ski jumping, cross-country skiing, freestyle skiing or Nordic combined. World Snow Day is not, however, aiming at making children become professional sportsmen, but at giving them the opportunity to give it a try.
